NEW CONSERVATIVE MEP FOR THE WEST MIDLANDS

Monday, 19 December, 2011

Anthea takes the seat after the EU ruled there should be 18 new MEPs, including three in Germany and one in the UK. It was then decided the West Midlands should get the extra seat. Anthea joins Philip Bradbourn OBE  MEP and Malcolm Harbour MEP.

Anthea as a former Councillor, parliamentary candidate on three occasions and active member of the voluntary party over many years, Anthea is keen to work with the grain of the party to restore to Westminster those policy areas that should never have been passed over to Brussels.

Anthea says, “I am looking forward to working with colleagues to do all I can to focus on the completion of the single market in services and to help our region’s businesses trade in Europe”.

The Electoral Commission was asked to decide, on the basis of the 2009 European election results, who would have won the seat had there been an extra place.  Anthea will stay in post until the next EU elections in 2014.

In a written ministerial statement, Europe Minister David Lidington said: "In accordance with the procedure set out in Schedule 2 of the European Union Act 2011 the returning officer has declared Anthea McIntyre to be returned as the additional MEP for the West Midlands."
